Just finished the game. It's a cool and neat little game, I can see this becoming a rogue like or roguelite with a little bit of effort(like some kind of combat). I think that the flag mechanic is weird, and people which just want to play the game to see the end will not care for that too much dying and letting the days pass(it needs to have some kind of reward/punishment or good ending/bad ending for number of days passed for that to have some impact),. I don't want to criticize the game, it's cool and fun game and whomever is behind this is in the right path for bigger things.

I think the idea was something like Hotline Miami, to start quick from the beginning and learn from your mistakes, I agree in a typical sidescroller that would be better, but I believe the main goal is to be as quick as you can to reach the end, that is why, death comes with some sort of punishment.
