It was never specified, I think the author has said a while ago that they wanted to keep it ambiguous

I seem to have found a bug. If you try to hunt Julian after hunting the kitsune, it will instead make you hunt the kitsune again, thus making it impossible to hunt Julian. Admittedly it was interesting to hunt Kano with Kano in my party though
