You could try to dowland the game again since its not a common problem, its probably just a bug or some file didn't dowland fully somehow so it didn't show you anything in the background, you should try redowloading

Umhh, I think its your computer problem, I played this game myself and the experience was amazing and smooth
I also play from laptop, sometimes the game won't stop automatically, you should wait for the end of a message/text or action and try then
You actually need to control the settings with the little arrows keys!
You could try always pausing with f1? or f3, I already forgot but try using the keys given at the start, it's between f1 f2 or f3 tho :3
