This game was exactly the kind of game I've been itching to play lately - unsettling stories with something else going on that we don't quite know yet and all wrapped up in an LGBT-friendly package. It was everything I wanted right now.
First off, I love the design - everything about it. From the UI, the sound design, the characters, and the visuals, it exudes late night ghost radio at every corner.
The "voices" of the characters match them so well and the almost musical quality to them really plays off the analog sound of radio with every speaker. They're so distinct that it makes it easy to recognize even in the middle of a tense scene - such as when Reb almost speaks to Loraine(?).
I adore how the background visuals accompanying the stories have unique styles that reflect the different story-telling style of each caller and the sudden full screen imagery that really hones in the player's focus on certain scenes to really drive home the narrative.
Speaking of, the writing is so excellently paced. It doesn't rush into it, but it also doesn't lag - and in the moments that might feel like they aren't related, the co-hosts are there to voice as much for the player - like with Cal or with Madison. I also love that not everything in each story is fully explained - just like "real" paranatural encounters - like with the Love Hotel guy cutting off at the end, leaving us with nothing but dread and unease in his wake, or with the mysterious passage of time between calls from Maddie, only giving us enough at first to make us suspect that oh... Something IS weird here, until eventually the happy music behind her distorts as a reflection of the distorted relationship she's been developing.
I especially like the slow ease into the stories, making them a little more intense and believable with each story. The Rabbit Doll is fairly commonplace, but that makes it a perfect story to start with and the way it's written is just tense enough to capture the player's attention and build tension without going too hard too soon in the game overall. All of the stories served a purpose in the overarching story while still being individually satisfying.
I'm so glad I finally had the time to give this game the attention it absolutely deserves and I'm glad firefly recommended that I play this. I can't wait for more of it upon release. There's still a few more hours of the show left to fill and I can't wait to hear every minute. Wyching Hours has certainly found a new fan of their show in me!
