Good game! Thank you

How to Run Project C.A.R.L. on Mac (Apple Silicon) Using CrossOver — FIX

I managed to successfully launch Project C.A.R.L. 0.8.71 DEV (Windows version) on macOS using CrossOver!

If your game crashes on startup with the following error:

Unhandled exception: unimplemented function d3d11.dll.D3D11On12CreateDevice

Here's the fix that worked for me.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Install CrossOver on your Mac.
  2. Create or select a Windows 10 64-bit bottle.
  3. Download and extract the Windows version of Project C.A.R.L.
  4. Open CrossOver, select your bottle, and click Run Command.
  5. Click Browse and select CARL.exe from the extracted game folder.
  6. In the Command field, add the following launch argument after the executable path:
    -force-d3d11
Your command should look something like this:
    "Z:\...\Project C.A.R.L. 0.8.71 DEV Windows\CARL.exe" -force-d3d11
  7. Click Run.

Important notes

  • You don't need to install the game. Just extract the downloaded archive and launch CARL.exe.
  • Keep CARL.exe, CARL_Data, and the DLL files together in the same folder.
  • If it still crashes, try changing your CrossOver bottle's graphics backend to DXVK and launch again with -force-d3d11.
  • This fix was tested with Project C.A.R.L. 0.8.71 DEV. Other versions may behave differently.

Hope this helps other Mac players!
