Each update improves the optimization, 4.0.0 is really better than all previous versions but a 10 year old PC can be difficult to use, I like to use new technologies to make the game look good and old PCs have a hard time making it work properly. 

Apparently it's just the way Itchio displays information, I recommend 6 gb to make sure everything will work properly. but 4 gb is normally enough.

Yes, the version (patreon only) 3.3 is already more optimized. the next version currently in dev (alpha 4.0) is focused on gameplay and graphic improvement but their is still optimisation process. every update will came with few improvement in some way.
