What are the holes in the trees for?

From what I gathered, the rat doesn't have an ability, the bat/owl could fly over one block tall fences (also the only one that could heal? I thought it was random chance), the bunny can use the tunnels, the bird can fly over any fences, although there aren't many 2 high ones, and the mole can break objects, but do you know what uses the trees? 

FOR EVERYONES REFERENCE: you can restart saves by pressing escape, and can also return to the main tower in the menu that opens up.

Just so you know, if you decide to reset your save, you can return to he main tower by pressing escape and then selecting the option (also how you restart)
