Here's a pic from the battle sequences. As you go through the game you accumulate stress, which causes you to experience Tourette's and Narcolepsy symptoms. The yellow actions are "compelled actions" or tics, which you'll be punished with extra stress for not taking (even if it's a bad strategic move to take them). If you give in and do them, you'll reduce your stress. On each floor new symptoms unlock, and each one manifests slightly differently, and they all get worse with stress. Here we see the player is also experiencing cataplexy (a narcolepsy symptom) and has lost the ability to run for this turn of combat.
Beating the game is as much about managing your stress level on the overworld as it is making good choices in combat, probably far more so really.
