REVIEW: 5/5 stars!! Critics are raving about METEOR!
I ran Meteor for four Forever DMs that work at my local boardgame cafe. My call to action read:
As a thank you for all of the hard work y'all do running DnD for the shop, I would absolutely love to run a one-shot (likely 3-4 hours) for you. Be forewarned, it will be absolutely silly, ridiculous, and absurd in ways that none of us can be prepared for. The only thing needed will be your knowledge of DND 5e, a full set of dice, and your sense of "yes, and" imagination.
My players came in blind and absolutely loved the experience. We made characters at the table together and managed to get through an entire adventure! Instead of focusing on a specific town/dungeon/quest, we used a generic world map and used each location as more of a stopping point or opportunity for exploration of the mechanics, items, and combat.
I was pleasantly surprised with how easily combat and other interactions ran. It was also fairly easy to balance player's preferred playstyles (God-moding vs narrative seeking vs vibes) within the system. My players ultimately won by using a spell of Supernova that they gained through the Great Library and destroying the world.
If you're thinking of getting Meteor, DO IT! If you're thinking of playing it DO THAT TOO! I highly recommend running it with people already well understanding of DnD or other TTRPGs and their systems rather than a table of new players.
