Not sure if this is your exact issue, but whoever you decide to run into you after you leave the theater is the one who gets crossed out when you enter the Car. E.g. if you talk to Imre outside the theater, you cannot sit in the front with him. So if you've been choosing to talk to Nia outside the theater that's likely the problem.
