Sam's Journey on the NES uses the MMC3 mapper which also drove many commercial titles back then.

The C64 version and the NES version accompany Sam on the same journey. We currently have no plans to port that journey to any more systems.

However…

If we make another Sam, it's very likely that we're going to send him on an all new adventure, no matter if C64, NES, or a new platform!

There's only a PAL cartridge for Sam's Journey on the C64. You can run the PAL cartridge on an NTSC C64, but the music will be too fast and you'll experience a lot of slowdowns and visual glitches.

Do you happen to have a NES as well? Then you might want to try Sam's Journey on the NES for which a proper NTSC cartridge is available:

We haven't thought of porting our games to modern platforms yet as our current tagline is new games for classic systems. On the other hand, making them available on modern systems could help those who don't have access to real hardware anymore. We'll see! 🙂

There's no copy protection as it would only drive up the costs, and people would find a way around it anyway.

We put our money on the majority of loyal fans of retro-gaming who support us by buying our games, posting comments and reviews, and spreading the word.

You have indeed reached the final boss, but we'd say it's still worth to beat it in order to see the game's ending! 😀

In multi-platform emulators, the used cores are often some versions behind their stand-alone versions. You could try a current stand-alone version of nestopia or fceux and see if the problems still persist. Another new emulator worth trying out is Mesen2 which you can get here.
