How do I use the cheats in the game? I'm doing it as instructed, but nothing is happening. Am I doing something wrong, or am I dumb? Can someone help me, please?

This reminds me of Undertale, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest and Dragon Quest. I like the look of it, and I'm very tempted to buy it.
