Hello, and welcome.

Solemn Sandbox is a physics playground for building little creatures, giving them a goal, and letting evolution try to figure out the rest. You draw a body from joints, bones and muscles, pick something like walking, jumping, flying, racing a course, dancing, or even boxing, then press Evolve and watch a pack of brains attempt it. Sometimes they learn. Sometimes they fail spectacularly. Both are the point.

The tagline is: a serious environment to carry out silly experiments.

This is very much in active development. I am updating it most days, so things will change, break, and get better. I would genuinely love to hear from you:

  • comments, suggestions, and feature requests
  • bugs, confusing bits, and “I expected X but got Y”
  • training results, weird gaits, and things that shouldn’t work but did
  • challenges you’d like to build, or systems you think could be dramatically better

If you make something great, share it. If you make something useless but hilarious, share that too.

How to share a creature on this board

The nicest way is a public link (this works from the web version at https://solemn-sandbox.vercel.app):

  1. Train a creature, then Save model.
  2. Press Share, optionally tick Also list in Public creations, and create the link.
  3. Paste that link in a reply here, with a short note: what the goal was, and anything funny or surprising.

Anyone can open the link, then Open in Solemn Sandbox. It loads the body and brain; it does not overwrite their whole library.

If you are playing the itch build, Save model also downloads a .json file. Other people can load that with Import JSON in the Creatures tab. These files are a bit large to paste into a post, so a screenshot plus a description is perfectly fine here — or use the web app’s Share button when you want a one-click link.

A useful reply looks like:

Name: BoxoBot V2T
Goal: Boxing / upright
Notes: actually throws punches, still falls over if you breathe on it
Link: (paste share URL)

The project source is public, if you want to look around, run it locally, or just see how the sausage is made. It is a living work-in-progress, not a finished open-source product:

Thanks for being here. Post your first creature, your first spectacular failure, or just say hello.
