1. the Drop Mechanic how does that work, I only seem to get the item if i catch the pokemon and take it off them.

2. the other trainers who follow you can help you battle the villain teams. Is there a way to get different ones or level the ones you already have up?

Rolling the hightest number isn't an instant win is it or can't you go above the max roll.
If not I was facing the boss of the collage, I had a plus one to my roll, we both rolled a 6 it was her win.
