like? scales as in a set of armour? help

found out my horse has green scales and now i seem to find myself lost... confused.... what am I riding? why is it called a horse? is it a dragon? some kind of giant lizard? or a horse that has scales instead of hair? is 'steed' perhaps a better word? or is this domesticated, reptilian, ridable creature called a horse in this universe? maybe i'll find out soon and this comment will become redundant but it shocked me so badly that i needed to bring it up
