I picked this book up after the intro sucked me in. I struggle to maintain focus (my ADHD once let me hyperfocus hours away into books, but now it interferes), so anything that makes me want to keep going after the sample is a rare treat.
I was a little cautious because I don't especially like misanthropic characters, but it turns out that Lux doesn't actually fit that description. They're burned, sure, but they want community, and that's precisely the kind of character I love.
I came back to reading after a long struggle partly through Martha Wells (both Murderbot Diaries and Books of Raksura), and Space Dragons fits in a similar space, which I adored.
The length feels perfect, though I admittedly hope for a series of novellas like this. The worldbuilding is entertaining and feels just about right. And the story is well-paced and just keeps getting better as it goes on.
Technical comment since some readers may want to know before picking up a self-published work: There are a few editing errors, but they're minor, and one of my comparisons above has far more. There isn't enough to detract from a really fun story. If you're American, be prepared for UK punctuation and spelling if you're unused to it.
