ok im back after playing!! first off that was incredible and im so glad i played it and second off i have some more information for the rest of us scaredy-cats. so there are three somewhat stressful maze sequences where you have to avoid an enemy, but all have unlimited time and i believe there's no penalty for being caught besides being taken to the beginning. id say the first is probably the scariest but i was able to get through it once i took my time and slowed down. the final one i just brute-forced ran through and that seemed to work. best of luck to everyone else playing for the first time and if you need a more detailed explanation just ask, im dogboyboyshorts on tumblr
for those of us who have gone through the rest of thecatamites' catalogue and are still hungry for more stories to capture that "anthology of the killer" charm, i've been reading the grant morrison doom patrol comics and they come pretty close. the surrealist settings the characters end up getting caught in are very killeresque, and the villains-- mr. nobody in particular-- feel exactly like the pompous ideologues whose nonsense bb would have to deal with. i seriously need to do some crossover fanart with these series, they have a lot of differences but they match up so well
This game rules! Really natural use of the Disco Elysium style dialogue and skills system, especially for such a different style of game. I hope that system catches on in a big way in other rpgs. Having a pdf open in another tab while playing was way more engaging than I expected it to be, though my mouse drawings could definitely use some work ^^' The intrigue is really strong, and so is the character dynamic between the player and the exp. I can't wait to see where this goes next!
really beautiful and meaningful little indie game. wore its inspirations on its sleeve while still managing to maintain a very strong sense of its own identity. pulled off the red/green palette without ever calling christmas to mind which i think is an achievement. and as someone with ocd i really appreciate the factory segment
definitely a testament to deconstructeam's quality that despite bombing onstage the whole game, i still found this super calming and satisfying! learning about the character's and their relationship was so fun, and the build-up made the already sweet ending even more fulfilling. can't wait to see what you make next!
oh, you're right! i totally forgot about that! i was assuming that the rabbits' beast form would be more werewolf-y like mango described the wolves' being. i really like the idea that they turn into just, regular, non-threatening bunnies. i actually went and replayed that sequence to remember what you meant, since i originally assumed that that was just a normal pet rabbit who mochi was anthropomorphizing. on closer inspection, it does seem like that might actually be A Guy! kind of interesting that senbei just has a sentient rabbit, who can turn humanoid at any moment, living in his house as a pet? but i suppose familiars are pretty common in this world, and trick talked about living as a pet before, too!
this series is so fun and sweet! the characters, of course, are unbelievably endearing, and i really dig the mini-rpg format you have going on here.
i think the most surprising thing about the story to me was the decision treat and mochi make during chapter six, to leave town and go search for treat's pack. i was totally expecting there to be some sort of heart to heart with the town of frosting, which would lead to them completely tossing aside their restrictions on carnivores within town, so seeing the two of them take a completely different approach instead was honestly a bit of a plot-twist for me!
i think i really like that creative choice, frankly. my main issue with the earlier chapters was how the discrimination seemed a little bit elementary, you know, like not how anything would play out in real life. those early moments are what led to me to believe that it really would take just one scene to resolve the whole damn conflict. i think chapter six goes a long way to creating a more mature world for the story to take place in. no, people aren't gonna set aside their prejudices just because someone they care about monologued to them otherwise. it's ingrained! deeply! the fact that there's a toxic community that the characters are trapped in, and instead of fixing it their only option is to escape is really interesting, especially for a world populated by cute animal girls and lesbian witches. it's nice to see a story like this, especially an escapist one, come to terms with the everyday realities of discrimination and decide to incorporate it as part of the plot, rather than sidelining or ignoring it!
i also super appreciate how the wolves are portrayed. they're an indigenous, nomadic group who are leagues more accepting and accommodating than the "modern" rabbits in frosting. it's a nice change of pace to have a polyamorous lesbian be accepted by her traditional family, who welcome her in when she's being torn apart by the supposedly "progressive" suburban town she relied on. i'm super excited to see how this series concludes!
(PS, the storybook that can be found in that fatcat bunny's house makes me wonder if other animalpeople have "beast forms" too, not just the wolves? i guess i'll see once the story wraps up!)
so much fun! the pixel art mixed with the smooth, unity-esque flow of the movement is a really interesting aesthetic i’d never seen before. the writing is absolutely hilarious, and, of course, the battle system is genius. one thing i really like is that you have the option to continue using either aggression or compassion, but unlike other games which offer that choice, this one doesn’t make a moral judgement based on that decision. it would be a huge waste not to turn this into a full game!
a’course, i do have one big critique: due to the way letters appear, it often seems like a game of chance whether or not you’re able to create enough words, rather than one of pattern recognition. bozo’s remix skill was essential to winning basically any match from that point on; it seemed a little strange that that option wasn’t there from the beginning.i think for a full game it would be necessary to input letters by commonality, which i feel like i noticed a little of already, but that might just be me seeing things.
