I haven't been able to stop thinking about it, the story really stuck with me. Two things it reminded me were the character of Green Eyes in Pact by Wildbow (urbanish fantasy webserial, Green Eyes only appears after around the first third of the story unfortunately) and this short story called Spar in Clarkeworld (https://clarkesworldmagazine.com/johnson_10_09/) - something about the transformation and isolation in each, respectively.
