This has to be one of the best backrooms inspired games ever created.

The horror game genre is overpopulated with mediocre, jumpscare filled games that rely on cheap tricks to scare the player. The stories told are generic, cliché and not as interesting and that combined with a poor attempt at scares creates a boring and unpleasant experience all around.

This game however is not like that in the slightest, it’s much more close to the classical titles that come to mind when you think of a genuinely scary game with an investing plot. Works like “Silent Hill'' come to mind, when thinking about video games with such an intense atmosphere as this one. The creator must’ve really put in tons of hard work into this project, since the gameplay and the plot intertwine so well together and it shows. The game’s been made with Unity and the engine has been really put to its limitations with this one. Graphics wise, it’s one of the better looking games out on the market and with the constantly upgrading technology making games look almost life like it's a hard feat to achieve.

Storywise the game is written as well as some titles coming off of Stephen King's library, the characters have a lot of depth to them and as the story progresses you can see how previous events affect their future actions, the growth is clearly visible and very natural. If you enjoy the tales with themes of monsters beyond human imagination, then I suggest you give this game a try. The way the author touches on the subject of fear of the unknown is unlike anything I’ve seen done in the medium of video games before. The only game I can think of that comes even close to this level would be “Darkwood”, which in itself is a fantastic game, yet with a few more flaws than this project. I cannot praise “Backrooms Demo” enough for how well the horror aspect has been reflected through it. Every little detail has been placed there with a purpose just like the author intended it to be and the overall bigger picture is quite a thing to behold. There wasn’t a single second in this experience where I was bored or knew what would happen next.

Can’t wait for more projects coming out from Hoshimiuwu in the future and hope they’ll be even better (which seems almost impossible to achieve) or at least on par with this one here. There’s a lot of potential to be utilized and I hope the creator can reach the peak of their capability in the gamedev world.

As for my rating I shall give it a deserved 10/10. Good job, my best wishes to the creator and their future success.
