Sono stato uno dei playtester di Un gioco serio; lo avevo provato, a Modena Play 2022, con Antonio, l’autore, Leonardo Lucci e Flavio Mortarino. Qui sotto potete vedere una foto del nostro tavolo prima che giocassimo (era sabato 21 maggio 2022).

Nonostante abbia playtestato il gioco, prima che questa campagna di finanziamento dal basso iniziasse, non avevo mai letto il testo del manuale. Lo sto leggendo in questi giorni, per prepararmi nel modo adeguato alla conversazione pubblica che terremo mercoledì prossimo (15 maggio 2024) sul mio server Discord.

Per ora sono ancora alla parte iniziale, ma devo dire che mi ha colpito come Antonio riesce ad avere uno stile chiaro e, al tempo stesso, completo. Ho apprezzato molto l’introduzione, nella quale spiega come ha iniziato a sviluppare il gioco e quali sono i suoi obiettivi di design, ludici e, potrei persino dire, politici.

Insomma, il primo impatto è ottimo. Magari scriverò ulteriori impressioni man mano che vado avanti nella lettura.

Ma, per caso, lo hai già aggiunto? Perché, alla fine del manuale, vedo che c’è un esempio di gioco.

GitBook è una risorsa utilissima e hai fatto bene a mettere l’SRD del gioco lì: a me capita spesso di leggere le regole da lì, quando non ho il pdf comodamente su tablet.

Credo che sia molto utile anche un esempio di gioco concreto messo per esteso nel manuale. Avanti così!

The 2023 edition is not yet over, however briefly, that I am already thinking about the 2024 edition. This year I would like to proceed in three different directions, I have yet to decide which one:

• pick up Sonata purpurea, the 2020 mystery, to give it a definitive publication;
• write a mystery set in Campania in 1943;
• writing a mystery dedicated to riders, probably in contemporary Cremona.

For now, I am leaning more towards the second idea.

L’edizione 2023 non è ancora finita, anche se per poco, che io già sto pensando all’edizione 2024. Quest’anno mi piacerebbe procedere in tre diverse direzioni, devo ancora decidere quale:

• riprendere in mano Sonata purpurea, il mistero del 2020, per dargli una pubblicazione definitiva;
• scrivere un mistero ambientato in Campania nel 1943;
• scrivere un mistero dedicato a dei rider, probabilmente nella Cremona contemporanea.

Per ora sono orientato, più che altro, sulla seconda idea.

Contesto storico

Una delle cose che mi ha colpito maggiormente del mistero è stata sicuramente l’attenzione al contesto storico. Potrà sembrare strano, visto che anche io e Ivan abbiamo scritto un mistero ambientato nel passato e, per dirla tutta, alla Cthulhu Dark Italia Jam, non è così raro che i misteri siano ambientati nel passato (anzi, piuttosto, è la norma).

Tuttavia, mi ha sorpreso positivamente la capacità con la quale sei riuscita ad ambientare un mistero in una città del Rinascimento. Io ho condotto studi storici e, probabilmente, soprattutto in passato, quando scrivevo qualcosa di “storico”, tendevo a essere ipercritico, cercando un po’ sempre il pelo nell’uovo. Negli ultimi anni, ho cercato di gettare via questa ipercritica, specialmente nei confronti dei miei lavori: ho cominciato a operare credendo che fare qualcosa di storicamente credibile fosse meglio che cercare a tutti i costi di fare qualcosa di storicamente accurato.

Eppure ho continuato ad avere uno sguardo critico, in senso positivo, verso le opere altrui. Ed, ecco, la tua ricerca storica, che sicuramente c’è stata, mi ha convinto. Sei riuscita a creare una città di Urbino del Sedicesimo secolo che, per me, ha preso vita. Sei riuscita persino a inserire dei personaggi storici in maniera, a mio avviso, credibile, con una strizzata d’occhio ai giocatori, che sicuramente sanno chi sono quelle figure, o perlomeno non faticheranno a percepire la loro importanza.

Temi e Orrori Striscianti

Come hai già osservato anche altrove, abbiamo praticamente scritto un mistero sugli stessi temi: il controllo sul corpo delle donne e il “mostruoso femminile”. Anche se, poi, l’esecuzione è stata molto diversa, credo; il che è un valore aggiunto, chiaramente.

Ho apprezzato il fatto che tu abbia collegato i temi che hai messo nel mistero sia con la situazione sia con i personaggi.

Se dovessi essere più critico a riguardo, ma questa è soprattutto una questione di gusti personali, trovo che sia meglio concentrarsi su pochi temi e farlo in maniera più pervasiva. In genere preferisco i misteri che si focalizzano su da uno a tre temi, e che continuano a tornare su di essi nel corso del mistero. Lo stesso dicasi per gli Orrori Striscianti.

Personaggi e relazioni

Ho amato particolarmente i personaggi e le relazioni che sei riuscita a intessere tra di essi. Ho riconosciuto nella rete relazionale la tua mano e la tua volontà di cercare la drammaticità dei personaggi, nel tentativo di metterli nelle condizioni di fare scelte significative.

Questo non è solo un mistero di discesa verso l’abisso, ma anche di esplorazione delle relazioni tra i personaggi, e trovo che tutti i misteri che riescano a fare entrambe le cose siano dei misteri migliori.

Conclusioni

In conclusione, credo che questo mistero sia un ottimo primo tentativo di scrivere un mistero per Cthulhu Dark. Ho apprezzato la tua visione e le tue idee, e come sei riuscita a sperimentare con un genere che, sicuramente, non è il tuo genere preferito. Mi riferisco al genere horror, ma anche al fatto che so che i giochi che hanno una trama prefissata (anche se, almeno in parte, emergente, come quasi sempre succede ai misteri per Cthulhu Dark) non sono tra i tuoi prediletti.

Trovo che l’esperimento sia riuscito: ti invito a giocarlo e a provarlo sul campo; a fare delle modifiche, se le riterrai necessarie; e a pubblicarlo in una versione definitiva, se vorrai.

Sì, basta seguire le procedure spiegate Cthulhu Dark, 2ª edizione, nelle sezioni “Scrivere un mistero” e “Riscrivere il mistero” (edizione italiana: pagine 36-57), o “Writing a mystery” e “Rewriting the mystery” (edizione inglese: pagine 27-39).

Il mistero deve essere ambientato in Italia, ma sono tenuto a usare un luogo realmente esistente o posso creare un luogo fittizio?

Puoi tranquillamente creare un luogo fittizio, fintanto che sia chiaramente situato in Italia.

Non avrò il tempo di tradurre il mistero in un’altra lingua. Posso partecipare con un mistero scritto solo in una lingua?

Sì. L’importante è che tu scriva il tuo mistero. Se la tua lingua è meno accessibile di altre non è importante: la mia intenzione è quella di abbattere le barriere che dicono alle persone che non sono in grado di scrivere misteri. Non voglio che la gente si senta addosso la pressione di partecipare in una lingua diversa dalla propria lingua madre, se non vuole.

Ho scritto un mistero con più di 10.000 parole. Sono fuori dalla jam o posso partecipare lo stesso?

Non c’è una regola sulla lunghezza dei misteri: il limite di 10.000 parole è un mio consiglio per non essere troppo prolissi. I quattro misteri presenti sul manuale di Cthulhu Dark misurano rispettivamente 6.890, 10.371, 7.330 e 7.307 parole. Sono sicuro che si possano scrivere senza problemi misteri intriganti con 10.000 parole o meno ma, in ogni caso, nessun mistero verrà escluso dalla jam per la sua lunghezza.

Ho dei supporti di gioco e del materiale extra per il mio mistero. Devo contare anche queste cose nelle 10.000 parole?

Il mio consiglio è quello di essere gentile con gli altri partecipanti: se può essere letto, contalo nelle 10.000 parole.

Il mistero deve essere obbligatoriamente impaginato?

No, è sufficiente inviarlo in formato di solo testo, o di testo formattato e non impaginato. Lo scopo della jam è quello di scrivere il testo di un mistero. Pubblicarne una versione definitiva, playtestata e impaginata come si deve, è un ottimo obiettivo, ma vi consiglio di farlo solo quando il mistero sarà davvero pronto per la pubblicazione.

Vorrei provare a impaginare il mistero con la stessa grafica del manuale. Quali caratteri devo usare?

I titoli sono in League Gothic (gratis), mentre il testo è in Century Expanded (a pagamento). Se scrivi su Google Drive, Oswald è una valida alternativa per i titoli, mentre Century Expanded è liberamente disponibile. Se scrivi con programmi offline, puoi scaricare liberamente League Gothic, mentre Tex Gyre Schola (gratis) è una valida alternativa per il testo.

Dopo la fase di scrittura della jam, posso valutare e commentare i misteri dei partecipanti. In questo modo, non rischio di “spoilerarmeli” e di non poterli giocare più avanti?

Secondo me, partecipare alla jam vuol dire anche leggere, valutare e commentare i misteri degli altri partecipanti. Tuttavia, le valutazioni e i commenti sono aperti a tutti gli iscritti a itch.io (anche loro partecipano, in questo modo, alla jam), e non solo a chi ha inviato un mistero. Detto questo, leggere, valutare e commentare i misteri altrui è assolutamente opzionale: se credi che leggerli pregiudichi la tua esperienza di giocatore, non farlo. Io, di solito, gioco come Regista, per cui non ho problemi a leggere i misteri degli altri.

If your language is less accessible than others it is not important: my intention is to break down the barriers that tell people that they cannot write mysteries. I don’t want people to feel the pressure to participate in a language other than their mother tongue if they don’t want to.

I wrote a mystery with over 10,000 words. Am I out of the jam or can I still participate?

There is no rule about the length of mysteries: the limit of 10,000 words is my advice not to be too verbose. The four mysteries in Cthulhu Dark’s manual measure 6,890, 10,371, 7,330, and 7,307 words respectively. I usually play as the Director, so I have no problem reading other people’s mysteries.

Dopo la spedizione culturale di questo autunno nel quartiere di Brera, ho cominciato a ragionare con Ivan del fatto che sarebbe stato molto interessante ribaltare il ceto sociale delle protagoniste, facendo fare le “buone” ai membri dei ceti subalterni e i “cattivi” ai membri dei ceti dominanti, come suggerisce di fare anche il manuale.

Poi avevamo, da una parte le prostitute, e dall’altra, le collegiali. Pensare ai temi dell’orrore femminile è stato naturale, anche perché nella Chiesa di San Marco avevamo trovato un bambino mummificato (se ben ricordo). Da lì abbiamo pensato che il potere, nei confronti delle donne, si manifesta attraverso controllo sui corpi e, parlando di giovani donne (alcune delle quali lavoravano attraverso il sesso) nell’Ottocento, il passaggio alla maternità imposta è stato altrettanto naturale.

Ecco come mai siamo arrivati a scrivere un mistero con questi temi.

Quindi, se ho ben capito, alla fine della storia, un diario può avere meno di 28 pagine scritte. O, per dirla in altro modo, il gioco dura esattamente 28 giorni di tempo reale (del nostro mondo) e fittizio (del mondo del nostro protagonista), però non è necessario che ci siano esattamente 28 pagine di diario compilate. Dico bene?
