Same sex couples can have biological children by ritual. If both are cis men or one of the couple can't give birth for other reasons, then they'd need a surrogate. In case of Ruben and cis male MC Mauve is the surrogate mother. I think I read it either in previous replies or on author's blog, though it's not mentioned in the epilogue.

Fiery is Ruben's disposition, it's closer to rivalry vs. Mindful (closer to friendship), and with it he takes a longer time coming to terms with his feelings etc.
