Hello hillcrawl!

As you can probably guess, you won! lol. Anyways sorry for the late reply, but I'll get into why it took this long in a little bit. For now tho, I've played your game! Here's what I thought about it:

Your game was great! When I first started playing it I thought it was really hard, and was going to comment about balancing, but after getting the hang of it and learning the strategy it was actually a fun challenge. It forced players to find a strategy that works and takes them a while to get good at it but then becomes fun when you start to play it. You don't see that a lot in games nowadays, as most of the time it's just pretty easy when you learn how to play. Games that are hard to learn and still hard to play even after you learn is a thing that every good game should have, to keep you coming back to try and beat it and not be bored always beating it/winning all the time. The fact that you have to beat it multiple times with different weapons also adds a fun challenge and new dynamic which forces you to find a strategy with every weapon. The fact that you could do something like this as your first game is honestly impressive, and it was really well balanced. You have a ranged enemy, a close enemy, and a stronger enemy, which are all essential in a well balanced game to provide a game where players have to focus on all the enemies at once rather than doing one type at a time.

I only had a few problems with this game though, and they were mostly some fine tweaking for gameplay and compatibility. The reason this took so long is I couldn't play it on the device I'm using. I have a laptop, but it has a generally lower resolution. Because of this when I tried to play your game it was set for a resolution that was too high for my device to fit in one frame, and I could only see one corner of the game, like this:

this is what I see launching your game on fullscreen, resolution is too high and I can only see a corner of the screen, while the rest of the game is off the frame.

On my laptop as well, the hitboxes on buttons were off, and I tried to play it like this, but I couldn't press it because it was off the frame. In the main menu the button hitbox was at the bottom of the screen, and the second menu the button was off the frame and I couldn't play it. I was eventually able to play it because I borrowed a friends laptop which had a higher screen resolution, which is why I'm writing this reply so many days after. I didn't have a hitbox problem here on his laptop, but as I kept playing the more I died and restarted the respawn buttons hitbox slowly moved down the frame. It wasn't noticeable, I only noticed it after line 10-15 respawns, but it is something you might want to look in to. Something I would recommend in the future when making another game is when setting your resolution, you should either A: set it to the lowest resolution you can get away with, which is not recommended because it will be small on higher resolution screens or the quality might be bad B: stretch the screen so that it fits in all devices, which is what you should do if you are starting out or C: allow multiple resolutions in the game so that players may choose a resolution that fits or even D: auto detect screen resolution which might work but affect performance sometimes if doing something like streaming because players may want to set it to a lower resolution and won't be able to. It is very important you have resolutions that everyone can use in the game, and resolution and pixel sizes should be one of the first things you do when setting up the project, as it is very hard to change later on.

Overall, this is a very good game, and is very amazing considering it is somehow your first game. It's very well balanced and a nice challenge, and only has a few compatibility issues, (unlike my first game jam lol.) Once again, I'm sorry the jam ended like this, and I hope you continue on your game dev journey and join more jams, as I am exited to see what else you make. Keep up the good work and keep making games!

Thanks for participating!

Hello hillcrawl!

Sadly, you were the only one who submitted a game :/

Sorry this happened but if you would still like me to play and rate your game, I still can! There is a error when trying to launch the windows version of your game, saying the .pck is missing, and that you might have changed the .exe file's name without changing the .pck files name as well.

If you would like me to still play and rate it, please fix this issue and email me a fixed version, or email me if you don't know how to fix it and I can help you.

Once again, sorry this had to happen, and I hope you don't take this the wrong way and stop doing game jams. They are a fun way to learn and have fun, it's just that this one was a little miscommunicated.

All the best!

Thanks for participating in my game jam! Sorry for the late message, I meant to write this earlier today but I was busy, anyways I thought I'd give some last minute info about submissions, judging and late submissions work, and also about how I will be streaming games.

For people submitting

Submissions are due Today at 11:59PM EST, if you would like more time to work on it please see the late submissions section below. For those of you submitting, here's how your game will be rated and how submissions will work.

Upon pressing the submit button a screen will pop up that I have set up asking you a few questions about your game. Some of these are private and some will be shown with your submission when people go to play it. The categories are:

Game description (Public) - You will be asked to provide a short description of your game, along with why you chose to make it and how long it took you.

Theme (Public) - There will be a multiple choice box asking which theme you used in your game.

Godot Experience (Public) - You will be asked to provide brief details about your Godot experience. How long have you been using Godot? What's your experience? What other games have you made?

Live Stream (Private) - A two choice question asking if you would like your game to be featured on my channel in a live stream of me playing and rating entries.

After your game is submitted and the submission period ends, the judging period starts, but more on that below. All you should know when submitting your game is that entries will be voted on 4 categories:

  • Use Of Theme
  • Fun
  • Creativity
  • Overall

These will be voted on by the community and a scoreboard will show where everyone placed in each category. eg, Fun: #3, Use of theme: #5. Creativity: #2. Overall: #3. (Overall is not an average, instead it is treated as a category which players vote on how much they liked the game overall)

For people who need more time

I will accept late submissions for those who need them. Please send a email to me at fiftythirdrail@gmail.com and attach your game page URL format is https://www.username.itch.io/game to the email so I can generate a submissions link. You will then receive an email back with a link for you to use to complete your submission.

For people voting on entries

There will be a voting que for all people participating in the jam. You will have 3 games in your que at a time, and must rate a total of 7 games before you can choose to rate specific games. This helps all games get a fair rating.

Please also be kind and respectful when leaving ratings, and do not post hateful comments, or just post complaining about the game. If you are leaving a comment (which I strongly encourage everyone to as it is really useful for the creator) you should include a: a good thing about the game why you liked it, what part you liked about it and b: a thing to fix in the game a bug you found, something you think could have been different. People leaving rude or hateful comments will have your entries taken down and disqualified.

Live stream playing entries

I will be streaming all entries live sometime next week, so check back here for the day I will be streaming them. Please comment down below a preferred time of day you would like me to stream (it should be sometime during EST daytime) so that everyone can watch it live in different time zones. If you are not available for the stream a video version will be posted after the stream, but live is always nice so you can talk with me or tell me to go to a specific spot/ give my opinion on something specific.

Thanks again for participating in my game jam, I am hoping to do this again next year, except bigger, (and more organized lol.) Anyways happy judging. :P

Hi Kyle! I'm going to say you should make your own models but you can use Mixamo to rig and animate your character if you would like. Good luck with your game! :D

Hi HadieDev!

Thanks for considering joining. I don't have anything against reusing old code as long as it was your code only, but there will be 3 starting prompts. As long as the code fits in to one of them it's totally fine!

Turbowarp! For something so advanced! I would've never thought, this looked hard to make and to top it off you made it on scratch. Good job, and congrats on winning. I hope to see more of your games and wish you luck on your game-dev journey.

Nice Update! Added a lot of needed features and fixed some bugs. Although I think the update deleted my progress, but I guess it's a good thing because I had completed the game. Next you should add like different areas that have rarer ore, and some more ore types to keep experienced players playing :) But it's a very nice game and keep up the great work! Can't wait to see what else you create.

Hi Sasuchi,

Thanks for playing our game, :) you are supposed to go left from the first station, so the stations will be on the left side. On the right side of the tracks is what's called the third rail. It is used to power the trains as they are in the tunnels so they won't require fuel/charge halfway through. It has a high voltage so you shouldn't touch it. As for the trains you aren't supposed to chase them you are supposed to keep going down the tunnels and keep progressing, hiding from the trains as they pass. If you need more help with the deaths a guide is in the description.

Thanks for the feedback though we will make sure the full version is more clear and it will probably be more fun because it will be more polished.

Nice idle game! Perfect for when your waiting to upload one of your assets for your game. :/ You need a downloaded version because I would totally download it and keep it forever. :)

Nice cat :) but I want to stay I don't wanna go do something else in the game jam :(

Amazing Game! Reminds me of the feather from super mario world. I love the art and the poems when you die, although the screen doesn't fit in the browser without shrinking my zoom. Nice game tho!

Nice game idea, although with the parry it doesn't give you enough time to attack before the enemy hits you, but overall nice game.

It was a fun game, nice idea. The ragdoll physics looked hard to make (but then again, I'm a modeler) I just started using the kid as a broom when there was a lot of trash :)

Fun Game, Although I Wasn't Taking Damage For A While. I Think It's Because It Keeps Healing After Max Health, But Could Be Easily Fixed With A Cap.

Nice Game, Beautiful Art, Although The Roll Keybind Was Actually W Instead Of Z But Other Than That It Was Great!

Amazing Game! It's hard to believe your a newbie, because this looks like it could be a steam game. It was kinda confusing at first but overall nice game.

Hello Jompilomp,

Sorry it feels empty to you, we only had 5 days to make it because our original idea was taken by someone else and we had to switch half way. A lot of the features we wanted to add couldn't be added due to our time crunch, but we are working on an update now. For those who don't know because it wasn't in the description, you can hide from the trains at stations or worker areas halfway through the tunnels on the left side, make sure the signal is clear before you proceed.
