An Appreciation Letter (Do not continue reading if you haven't finished the story):
I've been following Soulcreek for a long time and I cannot overstate how happy I am with the direction it ended up taking. And now that it's over, I can say with confidence that this was an amazing experience, from start to finish. I've always thought that there were certain furry-horror stories that were so great that they might even transcend the furry space altogether and become straight-up horror cult classics, much like Echo, for example. I believe you guys have created something that deserves equal praise and acclaim. This mix of psychological, technological and somewhat-eldritch horror was so well-exploited and interestingly written. And the character writing? I could go on for days. From the bottom of my heart - hats off. Be proud of your creation, because it is great.
If Soulcreek ends here, I believe it is at a great place to leave it. Just enough conclusions, answers, suspense and open-ended mysteries. But if you choose to continue it - maybe even follow Mylo's story now? I will be here at every update, excited to read more. Thank you for your work! This story will stick with me for a good long time. Cheers.
I've never read a visual novel this visually stunning. This really blew me away. I love all the characters, too. Each one felt vastly different than the last and very alive (Noakai and Anoam nation, assemble!). The writing was quick to jump to its worldbuilding, the detail of which is so thought out and expansive that it was a bit overwhelming to all take in at first. But as I kept reading, it all made more and more sense. Love your writing style, adore the art style. I'm so impressed with it all that it's hard to put into words. 10/10 so far.
(Light-spoiler review)
So I've played through Parker, Gil, and Lars's routes, in that order. I liked the experience! Honestly though, I wish we got more answers to the game's mysteries. I wish this game had built its updates vertically instead of horizontally (finishing one character's route, then moving on to the next character, instead of equally spreading out everyone's routes). I feel pretty unmotivated at this point to start the other half of the game's roster's routes, because 1) I'm not really interested in 'em, and 2) I know I most likely won't get any answers from them. Regardless, the content is not bad at all.
To compare the routes I played: Parker was my first pick, because he is the most attractive to me. In fact, whenever I ran into him in other routes I had to stop and stare at the screen like a sl*t for a couple seconds. However his route seemed to be pretty separate from the game's mysteries, I didn't feel like I got any answers from it. It's a cute romance though.
Gil was my second route, and he really grew on me. I kinda like the pervy aspect to his character, I found it endearing. However this route's inner dialogue really annoyed me. Gil is clearly into Walter (my protagonist), Walter's clearly into Gil - why aren't they doing anything together? Walter's awkwardness got in the way of the story, in my opinion. Felt very frustrating to read, especially because I had been anticipating a pretty spicy route, considering Gil's personality. Turns out, it's the least spicy of the three routes I played. Not the end of the world, at least we got some good romantic bits at the end. Also gotta say, not a fan of the RNG on Day 11. The outcome of the day should've simply been determined by specific choices made throughout the route.
Lars was my last route, and probably my surprise favorite. This is what I was hoping to get from Gil's route, spice-wise. Lars and the Protag are very cute and cuddly together. And the route answered some of my lingering questions!
All in all, I'm excited to see the rest, but I'm probably not touching this game again until I get the conclusion to at least one character's route. I need answers!! :P
I also had to go from 770k to 1mil, but I was able to do so in the span of about 30 minutes. Ingame after Galiano gave you the money he told you to "hit the casino" to get to 1mil. So I went to the casino and spammed the 1k option (I wish they would maybe add a 10k option to go a bit quicker). You can either save-load repeat until you get a good roll, or spam-click and hope for the best. I did both and the spam-clicking seemed to go quicker (you lose a lot, but hope to win a lot). Maybe I got lucky, but give it a try.
*spoiler warning*
This part was especially masterfully written, I felt myself feeling the same feelings as Caelan at the same times he felt them - upset at the start, understanding Caelan's pettiness, then the whole "whore" character's dialogue was so well written, it completely flipped the script for me and I understood her point of view. Really amazing job, loved this chapter.
Wow, this VN is something else entirely. Gay romance intertwined with horror, just a perfect mix. Love all three characters, and the themes are explored really well.
spoilers:
This whole game pieces / board game metaphor with Virgil and the mystery person really reminds me of the Higurashi/Umineko novels, I don't know if that's what the creator might've been inspired by, but it's genius and really fun. Can't wait to see what comes next!
