Have you considered speeding up shield regeneration rate out of combat? It takes forever without upgrades.
New upgrades / specializations (classes of ships)? Skins for ships (or new locations)?
This game is SUPER cool and really addicting. I REALLY like it. Definitely nerf defensive builds early game: discourages using the emergency beacon.
