r/gamedevscreens - My first game jam as lead programmer

Hey guys!

Me and 6 other people participated in the jam.

We had:

  • 1 person for 3d assets
  • 1 person for the UI and sprite creation
  • 1 person for the balancing and scene management 1 person for general project management
  • 3 people for programming and minor scene adjustments

I have never entered a jam with a team and I develop my games solo. Since I was the one who started writing the code immediately after we got the idea for the game I set up the base architecture and the main systems and all of a sudden I became the janitor of the codebase and the person people reached out concerning how to insert the new compositions into the project or how to implement something,

Since I am a self thaught programmer it was incredible to feel competent and actually having confidence in myself and that I know what I'm doing. Throughout the whole jam we did not have merge conflicts and the code stayed very maintanable.

I am very proud of the outcome. Please share your thoughts and critcism, it would be most welcome!

Have a nice day guys!

Unfortunately on some browsers the intro scene does not skip - in our experience it most often happens with Firefox. Can You maybe try to launch it from another browser? It fixed the issue for us.

Thanks You for the feedback! :)

There is currently controller support for the movement and the interaction button. Unfortunately for the mini games only the mouse input is implemented. Thank You for the feedback!

Thanks for the feedback!

In the printer task You have to turn the crank counte r clock wise in order to print a very serious document. For the movement and the interaction button there is controller support - I'm not sure if the second half of the comment was due to the lack of support or that You don't currently own one. Perhaps give it another go? :)

Could you please try it from another browser? In our experience for some reason it has issues with Firefox for example :/

Very cool game! I really like the hellish speech audio and the scoreboards. It is very addictive. I won and got reborn, I guess this is it now.

The had  a very cool atmosphere through the sfx and the grapchic choice. The use of the theme is very cool!

I swear to god I could not land a single one in 10 minutes :D It is fun to get the feel of it and learn to use the momentum but damn it is difficult :D

This was our entry with my team:  https://egodeath4397.itch.io/spiral-energy

Very cool mechanic! You hace use the spinning controls in  very creative ways. Unfortunately I'm not the best at these kind of platformers so I did not get very far :D

Fair criticism. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I ill most definetely take it into consideration next time I try to revisit an idea.

If You would like to play one of my originals I highly recommend You trying "Feed the Light", "Kingdom Manager", "Don't Break the Glass" or "Castle of Doom".

Thank You in advance if You give a chance to any of these games.

You are right about the game being very very similar.

I gave credit for all the material used, and also directly linked the game it was inspired of. I did not say that the idea was mine to any extent.

I didn't have I'll intentions. I really liked the original game and wanted give it a go if I can create it and perhaps give it a bit different outfit.

I am sorry if it came out the wrong way.

Hey guys!

I would like to share my game Space Deck that I have worked on for the last couple of weeks.
The game is a prototype and looking for feedback on bugs and improvements.

LINK:  https://elseifelse.itch.io/space-deck

What is the game about?

- Deck space is an incremental card game, where every run You attempt to reach the current map's target value.
- In between runs based on your previus progress, You earn primary currency that can be spent to upgrade your deck.
- Secondary currency is earned based on the amount of primary upgrades purchased and can be used to unlock new cards and new secondary effects on cards.

Big thanks for all of You who even just look at the page!

Incredible take on the de ck building genre.  Played it until the end in one sitting. Thanks for the experience!

Thank You for playing the game and thank You for the playback! Nice video.

Thank You so much for leaving a comment!

I really liked working on this project even though it is still just a prototype. I will make sure to check out your page as well! Thanks for playing the game!

Very nice! Very complex systems for a 48 hours jam. The music fits the game very well. Really the only thing that is missing maybe is some building specific sound effects and the UI tells you a bit too little about what is what.

Very impressive work!

Thank You so much! I am very happy that I could capture a certain feeling with the pacing and the sounds. I am planning to polish a bit more and add more interaction to the game later on. Thank You for playing!

It took me way to long to realize that the number of punches available is shown on the screen so I was confused at first :D Game feels responsive and smooth. Great job! The dance is killer :D

Thank You so much for taking the time! I am planning on polishing it further with more household item interactions.

Thank you for playing it! I gotta learn to make better cover art that's for sure :D

I also felt that the audio was the strongest part of the project. I didn't have time for a menu at the beginning since it was only 48 hours but I guess it worked out. Thank you for playing!

Thank you for the feedback! I kind of had to put it in the game. If there is a toilet in the game it has to be used.
