Most of the noble's moves cannot target the enemy's front row, and of the few that do most have fairly strict requirements on the noble's position as well. Moulinet is the only one that can target every enemy position from every position. The only other way to reliably be able to target the front row is by having both En Garde! and Esquive (which will have the noble move back and forth between the first and second row).

Remember you can see the allowed positions and targets when hovering over the moves. This is very important for the noble, because their positioning and targeting is very complex.

I don't think the difficulty is based on what characters you have, but what parts of the map you have unlocked. Go to the map, click on the Map Modes button, and switch to the difficulty map. It'll show you which areas of the map are which difficulty.
