Go to the game's folder, look for the "settings" file in there and open it with some text editor like Notepad. The first line of text will be "b EnableShadows True", change it to "b EnableShadows False", save the file, and then the soft shadows will be turned off.

Another thing that is different from the original game is the sword swinging speed. In the original you could spam the attack button and it would attack at the same speed that you press the button, but in this version it seems to have a cooldown before you can swing the sword again. That's my only complaint so far.
