The issue is that they're subtly but clearly separate from the background. I'm not sure if it has to do with the resolution, coloring, etc, but it stands out. It would work best if the objects were initially drawn in the same image that they were being hidden in.

That isn't true, it doesn't happen for most things from itch, at least. 

I strongly recommend adding coyote time and jump buffering, they're subtle but essential features to making a platformer feel good.

A suggestion: make another keyboard button able to advance the text without fast-forwarding, like clicking can, so you don't have to move one hand to the mouse just for that.
