You need to have an ability activated where the description states you can control the hosts travel and actions AND have the required control stat listed, then go to the map and select a location linked to your current location.

I think the image hosting has failed. can't load images and attempting to open in new tab gives an error.

From what I can tell, Dev likes releasing new patches on the 7th of the month.  Its happened pretty consistently since I started playing.

You have to be directly interacting with a character to possess them. If you want to force a specific character's possession, move to them on the map, use the 'Hosts' menu to select them, press 'interact with next period', then advance the time. If the random rolls didn't have them leave, you should be interacting with them (their character image is in the top right) and be free to attempt the possession.
