The game is for everyone, it doesn't try to like rub it into your face or anything like that. You can play as a straight male. that's what I'm doing.

Sahil kinda disliked both in step 1. he found the town too busy (even though its a small town) and it made him nervous so he avoided it and only really liked the bookstore. On the other hand, he found the forest kinda cool but nature tends to give him sensory issues and bug bites so he doesnt like touching stuff in there. The forest was a lot closer to his house, and Tamarack tends to do stuff there. So he spends more time in the forest and just wears full sleeves, long pants and a scarfs at all times even in the summer to have full protection.
Step 2 he's more confident and learned how to deal with his sensory issues better so hes a lot more fond of both the town and forest.
From the start of step 1, Sahil is a big nerdy nerd and would rather read books than do anything physical (mostly due to being extremely clumsy and uncoordinated leading to many injuries). He only ever does physical stuff due to either Qiu ragebaiting him or Tamarack inviting him.
As of step 2 hes discovered the wonderful world of programming and engineering, and become the epitome of a tech wizard computer nerd. Hes extremely good with them and is the closest thing they have to a computer prodigy in a small town like Golden Grove. Hes started making some pocket money by helping Mr Lin and his mom with computer issues from time to time, and has written them a couple small spreadsheet macros to automate some tedious parts of their jobs.
Since he's quite smart and feels bad for not helping people, others tend to ask him for help with their work in school. This also leads him to being strangely popular and well known despite his introversion to his complete confusion and distress.
He's secretly also dabbled in making digital art and tried composing some digital music but hes kind of tone-deaf and bad at music so he hates how it sounds, but hes practicing so he can show Tamarack one day.
Sahil was really fond of his mom during step 1 and did whatever she told him without complaint since he was still under the impression parents know best. But through the years leading to step 2, his relationship has gotten a bit more strained at times. He still loves her but she treats him a bit too much like a kid who doesn't know anything. He's started to realize that parents can be wrong about things and that sometimes he might actually know better than his mom. He still tries his best to help her out but can get irritated when she insists on doing things the way he "knows" is wrong.
As for moving to Golden Grove, initially Sahil was a bit apathetic about it, not really caring where he was, at least it would actually snow here. But as he met and spent time with his neighbors he was kind of glad he moved and met people he got along with. Around start of Step 2 he thought it was a pretty nice place, but a bit boring at times since the novelty wore off.
My MC is kinda just how I was as a kid with (slightly) better social skills, very quiet and a bit too mature for his age, an old soul as some might call it. However despite this he is always a bit of a believer in magic and the power of fantasy and stuff like that.
Initially my MC kinda disliked Qiu cuz he thought he acted like a popular show off know it all that never admitted he was wrong. He grew out of it though when he realized just how hard Qiu was trying to make it so everyone had fun even at his own expense.
He was starting to see Qiu as more of a friend by the end of step 1 but one of those friends who you constantly roast and tease without really meaning it.
By step 2 my MC kinda saw their relationship with Qiu as a friendship who have an understanding of not being the closest of pals. The sort that constantly pick on each other but are ride or die, hide a body together type friends when something important happens.
Now Tamarack, that was hardcore crush at first sight. And very unsubtle about how much he favored Tamarack, always hanging out with her and going along with her plans, even if he had to tone down her ideas to be more reasonable from time to time.
Throughout Step 1 they quickly became best friends with a mutual crush as the unpopular new kids with Tamarack being loud, curious and energetic, and my MC being almost silent but very level headed, cautious and stoic. Perfect partners in crime.
By step 2 my MC was going though a bit of a jealous phase, and was a bit overly protective of Tamarak from anything he saw as a threat due to being worried that she might have to move away. He also started speaking more out loud to Tamarack (and Qiu) and complimenting her to try and ease her lack of confidence.
In step 2 my MC is still trying to keep Tamarack and Qiu on good terms with each other but he kinda knows its a lost cause and hopes the two can find some kind of common ground at some point
