8/10, my first ever itch.io game!
I’ll start with the meh first, the blegh, then the good.
Meh- the animations for scenes are a little slow and can drag. It’s good for suspense and to add to the existing dread, but after a while it can be annoying. Example being the siren scene, you just have a wait an inordinate amount of time before picking your option.
Meh- maybe I haven’t done enough runs, but I think it would be cool if each crewmate had more unique benefits that would make choosing a crewmate far more interesting. So far though, my fave is Laurel. She made me bait, gave me raisins, took the night shift and fished. Woo!
Blegh- the bait doesn’t guarantee fish, which it definitely doesn’t need to be 100% fish rate, but give it a significant chance for late games. I don’t know if the fish rate deflates as you progress, but getting and rationing food/bait is already difficult enough. The challenge will still be there, especially since the chances to get bait is rare.
Blegh- I’m not sure if this is intentional, but I noticed the sensitivity is a little wonky(?) during the scavenge phase. I think having a dot in the middle of the screen ( an aim dot?) will make it feel better.
Good- I like the versatility of the items, like how the map and compass on the surface are similar but both items have different advantages. Makes the scavenge phase fun as you pick which one you’d rather take with you.
Good- The vibe. Underrated. When you’re low on health or starving, the screen is visibly distressed and makes you feel like you’re really in the moment; it’s quite immersive in that sense. The sea and ship company have a bunch of mysteries that makes you feel utterly lost (in a good way). The team and MC are being exploited, lost at sea (and are either hallucinating, being hunted by supernatural creatures, or both), and if they ever return home there are still troubles like debt. After surviving and being placed in the position to pay off the debt, it sets a really depressing reality.
The BEST- Captain Whiskers. The immortal cat entity. I don’t care. Whiskers is definitely immortal. He doesn’t even need to eat.
I think it’d be cool to add more items, scenarios, and maybe even different crewmates but these are rather trivial and don’t need to be added. But something to consider later on.
I’m addicted to this game rn.
