Concept is great, if there would be a "skip enemy's animations" or "resume from last perspective" option, it would be even greater. This reminds of Heroes of Might & Magic, where you as a large empire take over lands and stuff.
With some new ideas, like loot upon conquering rare planets or more fighters with different attributes will do nicely!
I can see it as a fleshed out strategy game!
