This game absolutely nails its creepy, abandoned atmosphere. Is it the somewhat chunky graphics and simple shadows? The dirty textures and extreme attention to detail that makes the space feel “lived in”? The Chicken Burger sitting on the toilet? Hm. Can’t quite put my finger on why it’s so effective at being spooky. But knowing that the people in here shower with their mannequins probably has something to do with it.
A mind-bending number of interactions and encounters are at play here, but unfortunately there’s an equally confounding control scheme that takes a bit of trial and error to figure out. Your top-secret science custodian also has to eat, and your boss emails you with a daily checklist of jobs to do around the base. Some of these are your run of the mill trash pickup jobs. Some require you to do repairs in remote sections of the base. And still others are centered around screwing with unintuitive retro satellite technology.
I’ll be the first to admit I had no idea what I was doing here, and going through the achievements list makes it feel like I’ve barely even scratched the surface. But this ambitious game still remains absolutely free on Itch right now. So… if you’ve ever wanted a game about scooping up trash in a creepy, forgotten, mannequin-filled base that simultaneously makes you feel like you need a PHD to play it, there’s nothing keeping you from checking out Voices of the Void for yourself.
