On the linux version, the button to advance text and claim the hero is only mapped to space.  There's no controller mapping for this function.  The rest of the controls seemed to have mapped to a controller successfully.  Thanks!  This is definitely a fun one!

Linux version did not have the action (E) on the cheese in the 'fridge' so the game is not functional enough to complete.  Played it again on a Windows machine to make sure I wasn't missing anything.
