My criticisms of XxU are as follows, as I believe this is the weakest of the 3 pieces of art I've read of yours, the other two being She Was Swallowed By The Sun and Loner_Dog.
Hmm. The story here is kind of poor admittedly. There's very little tension dealing with two people who are very easily understandable leading to essentially a "forgone conclusion" that Xelia will kill Mariette and unfortunately Xelia is so deeply narcissistic and Mariette is so blankly simple that it just kind of... The message behind this story is, "history is not made by the quiet, the world is a violent place, do not allow fascists to kill your soul." Which yeah, this is a message I agree with.
I also feel like the disclaimer to the story being, "this game does not promote political violence" while the credits have "Nazis have a Name and Address" feels counterintuitive and frankly just as complacent as the story actively condones. I understand needing to be a "responsible person" but the game actively supports hedonistic murder of neonazis specifically because of it. So that disclaimer really just weakens the message overall.
I also feel like Mariette isn't allowed to be an interesting character because she's a neoliberal terf, rather than being because she's a neoliberal terf she isn't allowed to be an interesting character, if that makes sense. She's made an example out of and as a result isn't allowed to appear competent or actually reflect on the things Xelia says.
I liked that the clericants weren't allowed to be interesting or developed because they were stereotypes because they physically wore masks and were both religious facades and police facades. They were playing a role in a church, dehumanizing themselves, which made it work. When you have a kidnapping victim here, bargaining for their life, they should be allowed to be a bit more of a person, allowed to properly think things through and try to understand, even if they ultimately choose violence. The point Xelia makes that "this story isn't a moral one" doesn't work when you specifically claim moral superiority to fascists.
And of course, claim moral superiority to fascists always.
