I was able to reproduce the beam splitting by pushing the mirror in this column all the way up to the top.

That’s a bug, good catch. If you undo past when you launched the bird and climb the ladder together you should still be able to finish.

OWL->BOWL is a good idea, but you don’t have a way to get currency right now. You can do the Bartender’s “something to help with the noise” quest with some of your other items.
