This is a common issue I have with tabletop games and it can be solvable by adding push-your-luck systems on top of an existing game. Adding Luck tokens to use on rerolls or reroll but gain fatigue (some kind of penalty); is a great way to mitigate this type of thing. So maybe it's a houserule I could add.

I bought this and was disappointed. It's super random with almost zero choice.
