I have to reply to this as it reminds me of my own family. I always heard my mom speaking of Ethel, thinking the person is a woman, only to be shocked that Ethel is really a man. I realize that it may be traditional to a specific gender depending on your country of origin. It is such a common name for males where I am from, but mostly for the older generation.
