This game is amazing. I don't usually play games on itch.io but this one piqued my interest. I love survival horror games and this game made me feel like I was playing an old resident evil type game.
I love the art style, the music in the save room, everything.
The shapeshifting enemies were terrifying. They made every prop in every room feel scary. And the fact that props that didn't turn into enemies turn into enemies as you progress is a really great touch.
I also loved that as you get closer to the saferoom the music gets louder which is great attention to detail.
There was a bug that I picked up on during the game:
Upon completing the game and gaining my rank when the company splash screen was finished, the menu didn't load (all I could see was black).
Other critiques I had are:
Outside the mansion you can go forever on the edges of the screen, I don't know if that was intentional but you can go seemingly infinitely in one direction and it took a while for me to accept that there were no secrets off the sides of the screen.
The mechanic of having to go into your inventory to reload eventually became a bit of a pain and didn't really add to the horror much. Especially since when you're going through menus the whole game pauses so it doesn't feel tense when you have to reload.
In the puzzles where you have to input solutions, specifically the scarecrow and card one, I completely missed the fact that you have to click again to see the input screen. I just ended up clicking the X in the top left corner which made me never see the input screen. I'd recommend the X appearing after you click for the input screen. But then again I am an idiot
I'd also recommend putting the act that you can shift in place of right mouse in the "Instructions" in game as well because as a trackpad user, it would've helped a lot throughout the game.
I feel like the map should show rooms that haven't been fully looted yet (like how in Resident Evil 1 rooms which still have items in them are shown in red), because I ended up spending a long time combing through every single room for interactable items.
I'd also like if you could skip the opening cutscene if you can't already.
I know that this game was made in 2 weeks for a game jam and it's really impressive what you've done in that space of time. I can't wait to see what you develop this game into, I will definitely be following its progress :D
