Books and lectures. Start with 70 int and ''brainy'' trait. There is 80 academics, 20 int, 50 medicine, 50 science, 30 manipulation 30 bondage etc. locked in books. 20-30 stat increases are locked behind lectures in academy. Dump your physical stats as much as possible, they are really easy to train in your home.
INT is pretty much only stat you need a high baseline because it maximises gains from books and lectures and I think there is a limited amount of possible INT gains. I also recommend high starting CHA since it is a pain in the ass to increase.
High potential-low capability starts are really hard in first weeks since you need to train multiple avenues while trying to keep afloat. If you hit the gym thrice everyday and go to a lecture, your build will became active in 2-3 weeks in game time. I recommend ''disciplined'' and ''educator'' traits for extra (successful) training per day to speed it up.
Rolls are calculated in a ''difficulty level'' model. For example:
To succeed you need 150 charm. If you have 30 charisma and rolled a total of 60, your net result is -60 (60+30-150).
Crits happens when your total dice roll amounts to certain numbers afaik. It is random, I would not bet on them happening.
