i don't think those were steroids. I think they were either sleeping pills (which he either takes or puts in our drink/food) or something to actually calm him down
I don't think it's "he couldn't" defend himself, I think it's he did NOt want too. I think he knows how strong he really is and was just trying to control himself. After all, he did fight back, but I think he did that with barely any effort
