you start with no shoes, if you go up to the door of the shoe shop and have >= $10 and you are sold shoes (30second speed boost)  then return to buy new shoes after they quickly deteriorate. Capitalism!

I haven't seen that issue.  Perhaps you had Carrots collected but they hadn't been sold at the factory to be turned into cash yet?
