I'm also curious how those hearts were obtained before. I wondered if you obtained a heart if you lost the minigames a certain number of times, because after losing, it would show progress on what looks like a "heart event" with the main character. I initially thought that would be a kind of special game over scene, but when I filled up the progress for it, I didn't notice anything happening.
