so when you click on an element like your models head or eyes you should see blue numbers from 1 to 10 at the bottom of the editing tools window on the left (you may need to mouse down on the window’s arrows to scroll down). These are your costume slots. At the beginning all elements are toggled on in every costume so you won’t see a difference if you switch costumes. On each part of your avatar only highlight the numbers of the costumes you want those elements to be visible on, having the ones you don’t unlit.

Imagine you have a mode in three parts, body mouth, blush effect, and wings. You want a model with wings off and wings on as costumes as well as a variation where each is blushing. You would want 4 costumes, so we will be using slots 1-4. The body and mouth will need to be in every costume so those need to have at least numbers 1 to 4 lit up. For the wings, we want costumes 3 and 4 to be with wings, so 1 and 2 will be unlit, or another term toggled off, and 3 and 4 will be toggled on. We now have doubles of two costumes, normal and winged, but we want each of those to have blushes. We repeat the same process with the blush parts, for this example we will say they are on the evens only so only 2 and 4 will be toggled on. Now each button will look like this:

1- normal

2-normal+blush

3-winged

4-winged+blush

when you are outside of the Edit mode, where the screen is transparent, you can hit the numbers buttons from 1 to 0 to switch costumes. It is not a toggle, it will change the whole model so be aware!

hope that helps!
