Theater of the mind. You could group Player mice and NPCs by close, near and far. Close is melee range, Near is ranged weapon fire, and Far is ranged weapon at a penalty or not at all. It takes one turn of movement to move between these zones.
As for sugar cultists harvesting honey, it's left open to the Gamemaster to decide. It's good that you are thinking about these things, so you have answers for the players and if not, you have a logical world playing out before their (theatre of the mind) eyes.
