Wow, I didn’t expect this level of engagement! So let's go.

Bob the adventurer has Skill 7 and the Athletics ability. He will jump a rift generated by a tremor in a dungeon. He rolls 2d6 and gets 5 and 1. 6 is a value lower than his Skill 7. As he has the Athletics skill, he succeeds completely and jumps the gap. If he did not have the Athletics skill OR had rolled above his Skill, for example 4 and 5, he would jump the gap but would suffer adversity according to the DM. As I am chaotic evil I would say that Bob dropped his sword in the crevice... That is, he made the jump, but now he is without his weapon that was not well attached to his belt...
