Managed to cheese it by spamming axe dudes then upgraded them like 14 times. I couldn't spawn in cleric and knights for some reason so they were pretty much pointless.
you have to use coins to upgrade them before you can spawn them, i learned it the hard way and just fully reset my game before i realized
