Remeber in the prologue there was an gravitational reactor and i think that was the machine he has been working on and that teleported us in a difrrent , galaxy, universe, Multiverse or different dimensions it's not likely that the main character was teleported to different dimension reason because The carians used the term alein or sentient species and that means another galaxy etc.
Also when the director of maintenance frieds talk about the big charge of energy being sucked out of the previous reactor and things whent shouth that implies that the new reactor or machine that Ty made was to strong and pick up a certain main character out our solar system ! (Guessing): Or mayby a diffrent time line , Parallel Worlds who knows ?
Still figuring things out but yeah that's my point of view 😋
