im a really big fan of this game, to the point where i have probably over 20 hours on it. very excited for the next update whenever it comes, but how would you go about updating the game? would i have to download the game again and lose all progress?

Glad you're enjoying it ^^
If you've got the itch.io client, I believe it will update by itself (never used it from the client end, so I'm not exactly sure how that works.) if you've downloaded it manually, it's a simple matter of downloading the new version, then copying your saves folder across.
