It helped and I needed one last package: "libsdl2-mixer-2.0-0". Stick it into your Ubuntu play instructions to run:
sudo apt install libsdl2-ttf-2.0-0 libsdl2-mixer-2.0-0
And add a game loading script with:
LD_PRELOAD=./liblua5.3.so ./mooncommander
